What is the Dalai Lama's viewpoint on the cause of "ghosts"?


Question by Jewel: What is the Dalai Lama's viewpoint on the cause of "ghosts"?
It came up in a conversation with a Christian friend. I told her my personal opinion on the causes of people seeing "ghosts," but she expressed interest in knowing what His Holiness the Dalai Lama thought on the subject.

Please point me to direct quotes or writings, either by the Dalai Lama himself, or from a Buddhist writing such as the Dhamapata.

    ghosts are our mental projection according to buddhism. Until we believe in it, it exist. there is a great story of tibetan buddhist master melarepa seeing ghost. the best way to get rid of those ghost is to meditate on emptiness and finally understanding the true nature of mind.
