The Real Men in Black - Review

Most of us have seen the Men in Black movies, right? Those cool, hip guys carrying around weapons that must have been created by "Q" of James Bond fame. Wow! Wouldn't it be cool to be one of the Men in Black, saving the world for some secret Government organization? That is how I felt until I read The Real Men in Black. Yikes. If you think of the Men in Black as being like Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, think again, and be prepared to have the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up.

I admit that before reading this book, most of what I knew about the Men in Black phenomena was from the movies. For whatever reason I never delved into the subject. I would occasionally read or hear a story that mentioned the Men in Black but I didn't give it a second thought. I always thought of them, if they existed, as being kind of like the Secret Service that guards the President. Man was I wrong.

Meet Nick Redfern, the author of "The Real Men in Black". Mr. Redfern is a full time author, lecturer and journalist. He writes for magazines and other publications such as UFO Magazine, Fate, Fortean Times and Paranormal Magazine. Nick has appeared on several TV programs like UFO Hunters, BBC's Out of This World, Monster Quest from the History Channel, Paranatural from the National Geographic channel and the SyFy channel’s Proof Positive. Nick knows his subject.

I hadn't heard of Mr. Redfern before reading this book, but I picked up his other books immediately when I finished “The Real Men in Black”. Some of his other titles include, The NASA Conspiracies, Contactees, and Memoirs of a Monster Hunter. I love Nick’s writing style. It reminds me of a detective from one of those great black and white movies from the 40?s and 50?s. Hard-boiled, to the point writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The one thing that stuck out for me early on in the book is that I trusted Nick and his research.

The book has many real life case studies, including the very first man to claim an encounter with the Men in Black, Albert Bender in 1945. It also includes some famous people giving their experiences and accounts. One such author, paranormal investigator extraordinaire is Brad Steiger, a personal hero of mine. You will find his stories in Chapter 4 and it is my favorite chapter.

And now a word of caution. If you are someone bothered by reading or hearing stories like this, then please don’t read this book. If things like this disturb you or give you nightmares, then maybe choose a different book. While this is a VERY interesting and fascinating read, it will also creep you out. I live in the mountains in a remote area near a forest. I can’t tell you how many times I think I have seen a shadow at the window or jumped when walking by a mirror because this book is still on my mind.

If the MIB ever do knock on my door though, I have some comfort in the knowing that the book tells you exactly what to do in that situation to get rid of them. You will want to read this book to know what to do before the MIB come calling on you.
